I hope Salvation will consider re-releasing “New York Vampires” and maybe give the DVD a UK release, as it’s only been available in the US up to now.The Nuns was an American rock band in San Francisco and New York City. I’m sad for her that she was always on the fringes, and never achieved the true success she wanted. I think what’s got to me is the way someone who was a bit of an enigma and almost unwordly, died in such a mundane way with nobody around her. She shunned conventional treatments, choosing to focus on homeopathy and exercise, more concerned with maintaing the quality of her life, rather than the length. It’s strange isn’t it, how the death of someone you never met (I did have a couple of emails back and forth with her, but never met face to face), can affect you quite deeply? Jennifer was estranged from her family apparently, and following her diagnosis she pretty much withdrew from the world. What’s more, she died in December last year. However, this week I read the sad news that Jennifer had died of complications arising from lung and breast cancer. Salvation also made a DVD of live performances, featurettes and two episodes of the reality series “New York Vampires NYV” which Jennifer touted around the networks in the US, with no luck unfortunately. The highlight is Jennifer’s ethereal vocals as she purrs the lyrics over the music. It’s something of a rollercoaster, but strangely satisfying. The Nuns album “New York Vampires” has blatant sexual overtones, but combines this with some truly haunting songs and vocals, particularly the tracks “I Will Save You” and “Anita”. It appeared that The Nuns creatively would stop at that point, but I always hoped we would see more from Maitresse Jennifer. She had allegedly turned to prostitution to fund an escalating drug addiction and died at the hands of a customer. According to reports, Mistress Kris hadn’t been involved with The Nuns for about a year, but had been a key part of the visual aspect of the group until that point. All went quiet until 2007, when Mistress Kris was murdered in a Times Square hotel by a wanted rapist. Performances in London, including at the now defunct “Black Mass” club night brought them slight recognition in goth circles. ![]() I was immediately struck by the beautiful and statuesque blonde leading the group of gyrating vampire girls on my screen. I first heard of them when I bought a Salvation DVD, “Devil’s Nightmare” which featured the video to the single “White Slave”. On signing with London’s Salvation Films as one of the first acts on their record label Triple Silence, The Nuns found minor fame amongst those in the know in the UK around the mid-2000s. The most recent incarnation of The Nuns featured a highly sexual performance style, led by the enchanting Maitresse Jennifer (Miro) supported by Mistress Kris. The line-up changed through the years, but the most consistent were Jennifer Miro and Jeff Olener. The Nuns also earned themselves a place in Punk history by supporting the Sex Pistols at their final gig in 1978 at San Francisco’s Winterland. They never really rose to prominence, but they were founding members of San Francisco’s burgeoning punk scene in the late seventies. ![]() ![]() During a rather debauched part of my existence, I became a fan of a New York based punk/goth/fetish band called The Nuns.
